James and Ethel Gray Park
This expansive park is a dog walker’s dream, a picnic enthusiast’s perfect spot and a walker’s paradise. The site is meticulously maintained by a foundation set up in 2018 to tackle crime and grime in the park. It has become one of the safest parks in the city with perimeter fencing and visible security personnel. Take in the spectacular cityscape view from the circle lawn or wander down one of many paths and occasional children’s playground equipment that ensures the whole family will enjoy the visit. There is a small restaurant near the parking lot which is handy for refreshments after a walk or a session on the new padel courts.

The Wilds Nature Reserve
Situated on the outskirts of the city, the 16-ha property is not only for those keen on doing any of the long walks on offer but is equally enthralling for visitors who prefer to enjoy green spaces without too much energy. It is carefully cared for by a dedicated team that ensures the local vegetation, paths, rest areas and lawns are always ‘showing off’. Unique to the Wilds are the occasional metal sculptures that only add to the vibe – installed by local artists. The best known of these can be seen on the Giraffe Lawns. Keep an eye out too for small mosaic instalments which add colour and texture to the natural environment.

Where: Houghton Drive. Take Joe Slovo Drive from the inner city or Houghton Drive from the north.
