The thrill of the ocean in the heart of Emmarentia

The High Altitude Surf Ski Championships took place at Dabs, and it was everything thrill seekers wanted.

Described as the only known surf ski race in the world without an ocean, the High Altitude Surf Ski Championships took place at Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, Emmarentia Dam, on April 12.
The event’s winners were Dabs paddlers, Ricky Talevi and Mike Arthur, who finished in a time of 00:42:10 and were closely followed by Wayne Jacobs and Matt Coetzer (00:43:18).

For many who take part in this competition, it is not just the thrill of first place that excites them, instead, their thrills lie in catching a wave. The waves are made by motorboats or jet skis, and Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas said people loved the excitement of it.

“For people who are comfortable in water, waves and things moving around them, it is just a lot of fun,” she added.

The competition is held once a year and anyone can take part.
