The utility company is urging vigilance among customers, emphasising the need to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a City Power employee.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena advised residents to contact the security risk management control room or their service delivery centre to confirm if any work is scheduled in their area.
Mangena stated that all City Power employees and contractors are required to present an official ID card while on duty. “These ID cards are colour-coded and include essential identifying information, such as the employee’s photo, personal details, a verification number, and a firefly hologram for added security.”
Residents are encouraged to inspect these ID cards carefully, and any signs of damage or illegibility should be reported immediately.
Director of Beagle Watch Andre Aiton noted that the latest trend of impersonation scams has become increasingly common. “We have seen cases where impersonators even have your bill in hand, making it look legitimate,” he said.
Aiton advised residents to be cautious and to call their security service provider if they are unsure about an individual’s legitimacy.
