Youth poet unpacks toiling emotions

Local high schooler explores complex themes in beautiful prose.

Mmina Mabatha titles her poem, Existence.

They act like
they need me
and go around spreading
rumours like
raindrops and wild
fires.

They dig too deep
into my existence
and are always out
to kill me with their
eyes full of persistence
Did I ever do wrong
for wanting to live
a normal life?

Hunting me down like
prey is what they do.
Clearly their life is
perfect and whereas mine
is not.
I never thought
existing would be such
a heavy burden to carry.

I am just a broken down
soul, left hanging and
for the cold heinous
world to see.

Fighting the demons
instilled in me is not easy
and hiding away
my emotions has been
suffocating and
intoxicating.

Hurt and horrendous
dreams are all that is
lurking around in
my life.
I never thought my
Heart would be left
In the dark
And that my existence
would leave a mark.
