Reasons why Marks Park Sports Club is one of the best
Various sports club found at the popular sports facility sing it is praises.
Marks Park Sports Club’s history dates back about 85 years. It was founded under the chairmanship of Isaac Marks, who was the town clerk of Johannesburg at the time, with about 1,200 members.
In 1951 the club moved to its current location and through its many years, not only has it gained new members but has also added to its sports selections.

The club has tennis, football, rugby, and cricket sections which all compete at top league levels. They also have martial arts, croquet, cricket, kettlebells, squash, archery, baseball, wrestling, dance and also dog training to name a few. Soon it will also boast Padel tennis.
Many of the clubs found at the sports complex have been there for many years. Take the baseball section for example, it was founded in 1980 by Josh Viljoen, Ian and Allen McCabe and has not found a better home since. Though they would want a junior’s division they currently do not have one at this stage. They do, however, have two senior teams.
Founder of MTG Fighting Fit Central, Norman Magua, said they have called the sports complex home for 12 years and are proud to be part of this long-standing and impressive multi-sport venue. “It is definitely a sporting family and has been a wonderful environment where sport and physical activity clubs are celebrated and appreciated.”

The complex’s training grounds are perfect for the kettlebell club as it gives trainer, Barry Geldenhuis, the opportunity to give personal attention to all in his class. They have been part of Marks Park for about seven years.

The archery club is one of South Africa’s top target archery training and competition facilities. This is one of the oldest archery clubs in Johannesburg, with a history that dates back to the 1970s. These are the only ranges on which archery tournaments are held in the Johannesburg district of Gauteng. According to the club’s, Barbara Manning, for the past 11 years, the South African National Archery Championships have been held on the sports complex’s rugby or cricket fields. “The venue for the prestigious event is rated the best in South Africa by not only our members but by overseas participants who regularly attend our championships.”

She added that with the facilities they have on offer at Marks Park, they have seen their membership grow and have been able to offer training to many previously disadvantaged people who would not normally have been exposed to our sport.
