Sailing through Brixton with David Gara

The Brixton resident has been making one-of-a-kind model ships since 2020.

No one quite personifies the power of the imagination quite like David Gara does.

Known in his community as the man who creates strikingly wonderful model ships through the use of discarded materials, what makes his talent exceptional, is that he creates these structures having never been on or seen a ship himself – using only his imagination to build these structures.

This all started back in 2020 during lockdown. Gara, with nothing to do, found himself paging through a book and came across an image of a ship. “So when I saw it, I thought ‘oh so this is how it looks’.

From then on, his fascination with ships was anchored. “I then just had a feeling of, you know what, let me try and design one. Those around me would see the progress of the boat and look at it with excitement and encourage me.”

After his very first ship, he has never stopped creating them. People’s fascination with his creations has seen each one sold. “When I build one, people will say, ‘this is your best one’ and when a build another, they say the same thing.”

To create these masterpieces he uses only discarded items. The treasures he uses for construction are found among the piles of discarded items. From old pieces of planks, to curtain hooks and everything in between, it’s Gara’s eye that shows him the perfection each thrown-away item holds.

This is what makes this Brixton resident’s model ships custom, as all of them are made using varying items. “But if someone has a specific request, then I can make it for them.”

Gara explained there are times where he could just be taking a walk or relaxing and out of nowhere a design pops into his head – visions which then come to life as he designs and creates each one.

Gara’s favourite creation so far is the one he recently sold. “The materials I found to make this boat were very decorative, and I haven’t been able to find something like it since. I felt in my heart that this boat is a beauty.”

Another of his favourites was the very first one he had made as he put all his efforts into it, making sure not to make one mistake.

Now, about 100 model ships later, and counting, Gara has perfected the art of creating visions that sail in his mind.
