Wits dominates Diggers in U19 Pirates Challenge clash
In a dominant U19 performance, Wits Rugby Club crushed Diggers 43–0 in matchweek 4 of the Pirates Grand Challenge.
A dominant display saw Wits Rugby Club dismantle Diggers Rugby Club in the Pirates Grand Challenge matchweek 4, securing a resounding 43–0 victory in the U19 category.
The away side’s performance left little doubt as they overwhelmed the home team.
From the very first whistle, Wits set the tone for the match, demonstrating both tactical and physical strength. Scrumhalf Appiah Ndzengu was instrumental in the early stages, scoring two quick tries and successfully converting both, putting Wits ahead 14–0 before Diggers could respond.

As the match progressed, Diggers struggled to find their footing. Wits’ left winger Sikhosonke Siyongwa added to the tally with another try, extending the visitors’ lead.
Despite a few moments of celebration for Diggers due to penalties, they were unable to capitalise on any opportunities. Wits’ captain and hooker Dylan Piek further solidified their advantage with a try just before halftime, leaving Diggers trailing 26–0 at the break.
The second half saw Wits continue their relentless assault, with Ndzengu crossing the line again for his brace. Although Diggers attempted to rally, their efforts were met with staunch resistance from Wits, who maintained control of the game.

After the match, Diggers U19 coach Ndu Soboyisi reflected on the performance, acknowledging that while the team started strong, they became complacent in the second half. “Wits had some great running rugby, and that comes with consistency against a good varsity team. We need to work on our physicality and focus on winning set-pieces to improve in the next round,” he stated.
On the other side, Wits U19 forwards coach Karl Smith expressed his excitement over the team’s dominant performance. “This was a good start for us. We are still piecing the team together with new and young players, and today we set the tone,” he said. With aspirations of reaching the semi-finals, Smith is optimistic about the talent and coaching strength within the squad. “We have enough talent in this team to make a strong push for the semi-finals,” he added.

As the league progresses, Wits’ impressive showing against Diggers sets a high standard for the rest of the season, while Diggers will need to regroup and refocus to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
