Emmarentia maintains safety record but stays vigilant against emerging threats

While break-ins persist on certain streets, ERA security portfolio holder shares insights on strategies to keep the community safe.

Deputy chairperson and security portfolio holder for the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA), Ayanda Mjekula, who has held the portfolio for about four years, provided an update on crime trends in Emmarentia.

Despite occasional house breakings, particularly along Barry Hertzog Avenue and other streets in the area, he noted that there has not been a significant increase in reported crimes overall.

“While we have seen some incidents in house breakings, particularly at the corners of Judith Road and Beyers Naude Drive, as well as Barry Hertzog Avenue and Napier Road, the overall crime rate in Emmarentia remains stable,” said Mjekula.

He added that the ERA’s safety portfolio works closely with various organisations, including SAPS and the JMPD, along with the Community Policing Forum (CPF). “Additionally, private security companies operating in the wider area are also involved in collaborative efforts to enhance safety. Crime incidents are reviewed at a weekly meeting of the Parkview stakeholders, allowing us to stay informed and proactive.”

Despite the stable crime rate, he expressed concerns regarding theft and damage to the electricity infrastructure, which poses a risk to the community.

To further enhance safety in the area, the CPF has been revived, and efforts are underway to recruit patrollers who will assist SAPS in their visible policing operations. “We are actively working to involve the community in our safety initiatives, which is crucial for maintaining a secure environment.”
