Emmarentia mourns the passing of town planner Gemey Abrahams—tireless guardian of law, heritage, and community values

The ERA paid tribute to Gemey Abrahams, a formidable town planner, community advocate and friend whose legacy spans decades.

The Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA) mourned the tragic passing of Gemey Abrahams, a professional town planner and long-serving member of its executive committee, who lost her life in a car accident on December 13.

Abrahams served on ERA’s executive committee for more than 25 years, becoming one of the organisation’s most respected and relied-upon voices. While she spent some years as chairperson, she was best known for holding the heritage, town planning and building portfolio, where her expertise and steady judgement shaped countless decisions.

She also acted on behalf of the Louw Geldenhuys Trust.

A firm believer in the rule of law, Abrahams was relentless in ensuring compliance with municipal by-laws. She persistently followed up with city institutions to address illegal land uses, unlawful building and renovation work, and unauthorised advertising boards.

She was equally unafraid to challenge developers, compiling detailed, carefully argued submissions on behalf of residents and defending them at City Tribunal hearings.

Her knowledge did not stop at Emmarentia’s borders. Abrahams generously shared her expertise with other residents’ associations and with the JoburgCAN network. JoburgCAN’s Julia Fish described Abrahams’ contribution to community groups as ‘irreplaceable’.

Beyond her professional and civic work, Abrahams was deeply connected to Emmarentia itself. A passionate and natural runner, she treasured the suburb’s open spaces and had a particular love for its history and architecture.

Her children, Jess and Stirling, attended Emmarentia Primary School before moving on to Parktown Girls’ and Parktown Boys’ schools, respectively. Abrahams was an active and committed parent, serving on the School Governing Body at both Emmarentia Primary and Parktown Boys during her children’s school years.

Her talents extended even further, including designing costumes for annual Emmarentia Primary school plays, guiding other parents through everything from pirates and Peter Pan’s lost children to giant rats.

Despite running her own town planning practice full-time, Abrahams always made time to represent residents, often at her own personal cost. Those who worked with her remember her as tireless, generous and unfailingly kind, always greeting people with a smile and a willingness to help.

ERA has extended its sincere condolences to her family, particularly her children Jess and Stirling, her partner Will, and to all who knew and worked with her.

In losing Gemey Abrahams, the community has lost a friend, an adviser and a fearless fighter for justice. May her soul rest in peace.
