Generator not seen as a sustainable solution for Fairland residents, says Ward 98 councillor
Cornelis Street residents and surrounds have been reliant on a generator for a continued power supply, an issue the councillor is urging for an immediate solution from City Power.
It has been over a month now that several Fairland residents have had to be reliant on a temporary power solution implemented by City Power.

In this time, a generator has continued to supply power to the Cornelis substation, which is then fed to residents in and around Cornelis Street – an arrangement Jacobs sees as unsustainable, financially inefficient, and indicative of a deeper operational failure that requires immediate resolution.”

Among many aspects, in a letter sent to the entity, she outlined various issues such as cost implications of the generator supply, the prolonged reliance on temporary supply, as well as security guard costs and conditions.

The managing director of Beagle Watch, Andre Aiton, said the substation is vandalised as it is off the highway and out of sight, making it vulnerable. “When the power is off, there is an increase in incidents where many residents are stranded without power, and it becomes very inconvenient,” he said.

Jacobs said this matter has escalated beyond an operational inconvenience and now requires decisive executive action.
