Why Minah Longwe wants you to get involved in your community
Her story is inspiring, and she is calling on neighbours to join the mission.
For more than 20 years, Minah Longwe has called Windsor Glen home.
Recently retired, she’s determined not to let her new free time go to waste. Instead, she has turned her attention toward meaningful community involvement, which began with a visit to the Linden Police Station.
Her trip was sparked by an inspiring initiative created by the Linden CPF in partnership with Community Hours. The project invites retirees such as herself and all community members to crochet and knit items for the most vulnerable, an initiative that’ll see the combining of creativity, compassion, and community spirit.

When Longwe spotted the poster at the station, she instantly knew she’d found her place. “I’m a crocheter, and I love people,” she said with a smile. So for her, this served as the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded women, learn new skills, and be useful.

Far from wanting to patrol streets or chase criminals, Longwe simply wants to give back to her community, though it may be at one simple stitch at a time. After attending her first session, she left energised and eager for more, already planning to share the initiative with her neighbours.
She implores others to get involved. Whether you crochet, knit, or just care about your community, there’s a place for you. Her journey proves that retirement isn’t an ending; it’s an opening to give, connect, and inspire.
