Fallen tree crushes car on Beyers Naudé Drive after heavy rains

A driver escaped unharmed after a tree fell onto his car on April 24.

A motorist escaped unharmed after a tree fell onto his car on Beyers Naudé Drive on April 24, following days of heavy rainfall.

The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.

According to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) spokesperson Jenny Moodley, recent weather conditions may have played a role in the collapse, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Moodley said prolonged rainfall can affect the stability of trees.

“Extended periods of rain can saturate the soil and weaken root support, while wind places additional pressure on trees. Together, these conditions can increase the risk of trees or large branches failing,” she said.

No injuries were reported in the incident. City Parks confirmed it had contacted the motorist, who escaped without harm, though his vehicle was badly damaged.

Emergency teams were dispatched after the incident was reported, with the entity’s 24-hour response team working to clear debris and secure the area. Assistance was also requested to safely manage nearby power lines.

Operations manager at SCP Security, Juan van der Westhuizen, said teams moved quickly to manage the scene.

“We responded as soon as the incident was reported and worked with emergency services to secure the area and ensure the safety of those on site,” he said.

Residents have been urged to remain cautious during periods of persistent rain and storms, particularly around large trees.

City Parks said it continues to work with emergency services on site, adding that trees along the affected stretch will be assessed, with further action guided by the outcome of the investigation.
