Less than a year after opening its doors, Melville’s Die Pienk Kerk has earned national recognition, taking second place in the South African Restaurant Awards’ Best Overall Guest Experience category.

For owner Yanni Briel, the achievement came as a surprise. “When I received the email saying we’d been nominated, I couldn’t believe it. To receive this recognition after only eight months was overwhelming.”

Housed in a historic former church, Die Pienk Kerk has become known for preserving the building’s character while creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Briel believes the award is a reflection of more than just the venue itself. “It starts with our staff. From the greeting at the door to the food and service, every part of the guest experience matters.”

The recognition has boosted staff morale, reinforcing the value of months of training and attention to detail. Briel says the restaurant’s success would not have been possible without the support of the Melville community. Many locals have become regular visitors, stopping in several times a week for coffee, lunch, or simply to catch up. “It feels like family. The community embraced the idea from the beginning, and that support has meant everything.”

Looking ahead, Briel plans to continue evolving the restaurant with seasonal menu changes, live music, and theatre performances, while remaining true to the charm of the historic building. “This award motivates us to keep improving. Second place is an incredible honour, but it also inspires us to keep striving for even more.”

For Melville, the accolade is not only a celebration of a restaurant’s success, but also of a community that has embraced one of its most distinctive landmarks.
