A fundraising effort is underway to restore the historic Coffin Rest at Braamfontein Cemetery, where sections of the structure have deteriorated after years of exposure to the elements.

Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries (FoJC) has identified the Coffin Rest as a priority project, saying the prominent cemetery structure forms part of the site’s history and deserves to be preserved. Antoinette Morgan, of FoJC, said the organisation periodically takes on projects aimed at protecting and preserving aspects of Johannesburg’s historic cemeteries. She said the Coffin Rest had become increasingly worn over time and had never been properly restored or protected against the elements. “The Coffin Rest is such a prominent part of the cemetery and its history and its restoration and preservation is an important matter.”

Although the structure has been in decline for some time, Morgan said it remained repairable and could still be preserved for the long term. An initial quotation for the rehabilitation work came in at more than R300 000. Following further discussions with the contractor about what work was necessary and how it could be carried out, FoJC is now waiting for a revised quotation. Morgan said the organisation hoped the updated cost would be substantially lower, as the restoration will be funded through donations.

The planned work includes replacing an entire section of the roof, as well as individual roof tiles that have deteriorated. Parts of the wooden roof support structure also require replacement, with some sections needing to be completely rebuilt. The timber will then need to be sealed and treated to protect it from further exposure to the elements, while the roof tiles will also require protection. The columns supporting the Coffin Rest are also due for attention. According to Morgan, the old paint needs to be removed before the columns are repaired, treated, and repainted.

FoJC is considering which parts of the work should be handled by professional contractors and which can be completed by a trusted handyman, with the more specialised roof and structural work requiring appropriate expertise.
