University of Johannesburg sprinter Leendert Koekemoer has broken a 31-year-old national athletics record in Brescia, Italy.
The athlete won the men’s U20 400m at the Grand Prix Brescia in 00:00:44.52, breaking the previous record of 00:00:45.15 set by Riaan Dempers in 1994.
Koekemoer’s time shaved more than six-tenths of a second off the national mark, setting a new personal best, as sub-45-second times are rare for junior athletes globally.
