Community work is about more than cleaning streets and public spaces for Bruce Mahlangu, who aims to help residents feel safe, supported and proud of where they live.

Mahlangu, a member of Melville’s CREASS Community Services team, has worked alongside Danny Nunes for more than two years. He says what he enjoys most about the job is working directly with the community.

Nunes described Mahlangu as a person who takes his responsibility seriously, saying he is a guy on a mission who gets the job done whenever he is given a task.

For Mahlangu, that approach comes naturally. “I love it a lot because I am a perfectionist. Whatever I do, I need to make sure that standard is present,” he said.

His commitment is particularly visible during community clean-ups, where residents and volunteers work together to improve shared spaces. Mahlangu said the satisfaction comes from knowing the work can make a direct difference to the people who live in the area.

He also believes communities should not always wait for municipal intervention before addressing problems they can tackle themselves. “When everything is up to standard, we do not have to wait for the municipalities. If we, as residents, can just step in and do whatever we can, that is what is needed to build a strong community,” Mahlangu said.

For him, community clean-ups are also about bringing people together. Mahlangu believes that spirit of togetherness is important in building communities where residents take responsibility for their surroundings and work collectively to solve problems.

His role may involve practical tasks such as cleaning and maintaining public spaces, but his motivation extends beyond the work itself. For Mahlangu, it is about creating a community where people feel safe, where standards are maintained and where residents understand that they can play a role in improving their own neighbourhoods.
