I read the article written by P. Oosthuizen with all due respect I find it not well researched.

Without denying the fact of crime, syndicates and drunkenness where Mr O. fails is what makes human beings end up in such situations.

Oppression causes depression, which the Afrikaners know for a fact under the rule of the British. Most Afrikaners went through these things Mr O. is talking about.

The truth about Sophiatown and the sufferings of its people is everywhere. I was born there and my parents told me everything about this historical place. We were moved when I was only four years old.

He talks about muti-killings not about shootings, cannibalism not about unnecessary arrests, witchcraft not about apartheid laws, absent fathers not about detentions without trial, civilization as if pass laws were civilised and lastly Sophiatown was a playground of the police force raiding homes 24/7. Was this civilization? No.

Mr O. please visit the apartheid museum in Gold Reef and write again to tell us what you saw there.

Sophiatown under siege still produced a number of talented people in art the late Mirriam Makeba is one of them. There were lawyers, doctors, teachers, priests, journalist who came out of Sophiatown thinking of the conditions they leaved under this is something Mr O. Should be writing about.

My question to me Mr O. is: were there enough education institutions in Sophiatown to decrease illiteracy?

Your response will be appreciated.
