At this time when shopping centre crime is on the rise, I agree with the reader of two weeks ago who urges Cresta to spend money on upgrading security rather than redecorating. Last week I was forced to take the lift at Campus Square due to the escalator still being out of working order for countless weeks now. I use a two-wheeled trolley in which to pack my groceries as I walk to and from the centre. I entered the lift with a lady who worked at Standard Bank and a young woman, presumably a student, wearing over-sized sunglasses. As soon as the lift doors closed, the one wearing the sun glasses said, “Right ladies, this is a hold up. When we get out of here, you’ll take us to your cars.” My first thought was, she has a couple of thugs waiting for us on the ground floor. I calmly told her I did not have a car. The doors opened and she promptly burst out laughing and said she was only joking. “Well that is the most stupid joke I have ever heard!” I snapped, and stormed off. If I wasn’t so angry I would have looked to see if there was a security guard in the immediate vicinity and reported her. If she was indeed a student, my question is: “Does she not know UJ is for intelligent people?!”
