700 runners fill Berario at launch of new running club

BERARIO – The social side of running is not forgotten at the new Run Zone Athletics Club.

Runners took on Berario and Northcliff on the mornings of 21 and 22 October, as Run Zone Athletics Club was launched.

Dubbed ‘the people’s running club’, owner Graham Block said the club aims to cater for both the social and serious side of running.

“We hope to take people from the couch to the road, and ensure the club is affordable and accessible for everyone,” he said.

A whopping 700 people attended the first club runs.

Starting at Berario Recreation Centre, where the club is now based, the runners wound through the suburbs on marked 5km, 10km, 15km, 20km, and 25km routes, before finding themselves back at the centre.

There were water stations every 5km, but refreshments awaited the runners upon their return.

Mike Elzarif comes in to the finish.

The club has an active Facebook page, where Block promised to post training programmes for any social media users to try out.

“We will also have running workshops open to the public, and made free thanks to sponsors.”

Block encouraged community members to give running a chance and contact the club.
