Johannesburg Bowls Association proves the best at Super 10 Tournament
JOBURG – Local seniors team outshines the rest at national bowls tournament.
Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) fielded the best team in the country at the Sables Bowling Association’s recent Super 10 Tournament.
The seniors’ bowls event, held at Discovery Bowling Club in Roodepoort, saw six districts competing. These were Sables, Ekhurhuleni, Gauteng North, Lowveld, Sedibeng and JBA.
This year the overall winners were JBA, with the individual honours going to JBA for the singles, Sables in the pairs, Gauteng North in the trips and Ekurhuleni in the fours.
“This tournament started 16 years ago and comments from those who participated were that this is the best-run seniors’ tournament in the country,” said JBA vice chairperson Allan Gordon. “The event is played over three days with each district playing against one another.”
He added that the JBA recently formed a Seniors Association and its members play every Thursday afternoon – either in ‘tabs’ draws, or in organised tournaments.
Players who represented the Association at the Super 10 Tournament were Chris Theron (Ruimsig Country Club), Rodney Wayne (Randburg Bowls Club), Roberto Gagliardi (Randburg), Johnny Walker (Randburg), Greg Valjalo (Bryanston Sports Club), Andre Bouwer (Bryanston Sports Club), Chris Jago (Bedfordview Bowling Club), Don Steenkamp (Morningside Country Club), Allan Gordon (Wanderers Bowling Club), Ray Wilson (Bryanston Sports Club) and Harold Muller (Bedfordview).
