Northern Blues victorious at Womens Indoor Hockey Challenge

FAIRLAND – The three-day tournament was held at Cliffview Primary School.

Cliffview Primary School was the ultimate setting for the Women’s Indoor Hockey Challenge held recently.

The three-day tournament had hockey teams from eastern and northern Gauteng, as well Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal compete for the coveted win. The finals however, saw heavy-weight teams, Northern Blues and KZN Raiders strike hockey sticks for the win.

Ultimately it was the Northern Blues who took home the winners title beating the KZN Raiders 5–3. Tournament director, Fiona Harrison, who said the primary school was the best venue in a long time, added that the final game could have gone either way.

Harrison noted that the standard of the challenge was very good, “Even though it was development tournament, and was quadrangular.”
The three-day challenge was aimed at developing not only the players themselves but the umpires too. This was the first tournament of its kind and was held in lieu of the inter-provincial tournament that has been postponed until August. “We were looking for something the players could do because they lost out of the opportunity to play during this time.”

Smaller provinces are said to have also shown how their indoor hockey had improved leaps and bounds, ‘which is really good as it is nice that they come to tournaments like this and be competitive as it is a good platform’. Harrison added that some of the young hockey players gained experience from having played in events such as the pro-series indoor, and showed that there is a lot of talent coming through which is good for the sport.
