Caelin strikes gold

VICTORY PARK – After competing in the SA Gym Games, Caelin Mayers received both gold and silver.

At the recently held South African Gym Games Caelin Mayers, who performed under the artistic gymnastics category, won a gold medal on floor and beam and silver medal for her bar and vault.

The gymnast has been part of the sporting code for about 10 years now and has perfected her craft thanks to the Johannesburg Gymnastics Club. She loves that the sport is disciplined, that she gets to learn new skills on apparatus she competes on, all while making friends at competitions.

Although the gold medallist explained how she does better on the beam and floor, it must be safe to assume that with the four and half hours per day she spends at the gym, she is close to perfecting even her most challenging apparatus.

The Robindale resident was overjoyed when she achieved gold on the floor and beam, “All the hard work, hours of training and effort is worth it.”
To have taken part in the Games, she had to previously qualify at both district and provincial competitions.

One of her hopes is that her peers learn to be more committed to whatever they choose through seeing her efforts.
The De La Salle Holy Cross College learner advises other gymnasts ‘to find discipline within themselves to follow through and time management as there are only so many hours in the day to get it all done’.
In her 10 years in the sport she has had to overcome challenges like a knee and ankle injuries.

She now looks forward to the national team selection training camp in December for the 2022 competitions and she hopes for a world cup competition too.
