UJ and Discovery paint Auckland Park pink for a cause

The Vitality Run Series joined forces with UJ to raise vital funds for students in need.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sport Division partnered with Discovery Vitality for the newly rebranded UJ Future Forward Fun Run, which took place on September 20. The collaboration brought a burst of energy to Auckland Park.

The fun run formed part of UJ’s ongoing fundraising drive, which the university launched in 2015 in the wake of the Fees Must Fall movement.

Over the past decade, the campaign has been dedicated to supporting around 5 000 students who fall into the funding gap – those not qualifying for full government financial aid but unable to afford tuition from their own pockets.

Phumelele Kubeka, marketing manager for sponsorships and experiential marketing at Discovery, said the initiative is tied directly to Vitality’s mission of promoting health and fitness.

“The Vitality Run Series was born out of the fact that Discovery really believes in wellness and health,” Kubeka explained.

“We have Vitality Run Series events that happen throughout the year and across different provinces. We decided it was about time we did something for the youth, and so we invested in the Varsity Vitality Run Series.

The collaboration with UJ, which is so deeply committed to a healthier campus and to wellness, felt like the perfect partnership.”
