‘Tis the Season to be jolly?

LINDEN - Ever felt that Christmas under our sunny skies is somewhat... untraditional? At the Linden Winter Festival, sipping on gluhwein and shopping in July give South Africans the chance to experience a little bit of a traditional, winter Christmas.

Christmas can never come too early, and in Linden, celebrating it in July is par for the course.

Shops and restaurants in the suburb’s trendy 4th Avenue opened their doors until late for their annual Winter Festival starting on 24 July. Passers-by and shoppers indulged in winter treats displayed in shops and sidewalks – gluhwein, hot chocolate and sweets and snacks were there to sample. Meanwhile, goods on sale ranged from crafts made by famous artists and designers and delicious foods. There was even a treasure hunt – shoppers could collect clues at every participating store and then put the clues together to win fabulous prizes.

The Festival ended on 26 July with a craft market and live music.

“Everybody participating and shopping had a good time,” Gail Harris, one of the festival’s organisers reported on 29 July.

“We’re adding up the competition entries now and will announce the winner soon.”

Harris said the 4th Avenue community often run events, including a very popular Spring festival. “We want to put the Linden brand on the map,” she said.
