Wits to host theatre festival

JOBURG – Wits theatre is set to showcase a host of outstanding theatrical productions at their 969 Festival.

The Wits Theatre at the University of the Witswatersrand in Braamfontein is set to host the upcoming 12th 969 Festival from 15 to 26 July.

Theatre, music and poetry lovers will be treated to at least 16 productions that hit local stages in the recent past. Themes of sex, death, suffering, anti-semitism, poverty, despair, society, and history will all be incorporated in these productions.

The festival is aimed to bring theatrical productions straight from the lineup of the the National Arts Festival. Plays to feature include the likes of Singaravva and the Palace, Ndebele Funeral, Kafka and Son, Hirsch, Kafka’s Ape, Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri, Father Father Father, We Didn’t Come to Hell for the Croissants: 7 Deadly New Stories for Consenting Adults, Simply Sapiens, Smaarties, aLEXA, Actress and Girl, Boegoespruit Ext 25, Crossing, and Dead Yellow Sands.

Director of Wits Theatre, Gita Pather, was enthusiastic about the 969 Festival and its potential to attract people from all walks of life, due to the coverage of such broad subject matters. “The festival will provide a fascinating snapshot into our cultural landscape and specifically the exciting work being staged by theatre makers,” she said. “I am really proud of this year’s programme, a combination of international and South African work, because it showcases a diverse range of productions and styles of performance.”
