Young DJ making waves

BRAAMFONTEIN – Keenan Cannell, a hip-hop DJ is making music his career.

Keenan Cannell is a young man who is passionate about carving himself a career in the world of music as a DJ. Cannell (18) completed his Matric in 2014 and set off on a journey to pursue a career in music. “I really love being a DJ and it has fascinated me since I was in Grade 8. I used to go to events just to watch other DJ’s play so that I could learn how to be a good DJ,” Cannell said.

The Braamfontein resident added that his favourite DJs are Twins on Decks as they inspired him to be a better DJ and that they had a unique sound. “In the beginning it was hard to get bookings and I started by playing for free but now I get bookings and I get paid, even though it is nowhere near the R70 000 DJ Zinhle gets paid per gig,” he said.

Cannell said that he got his name when he had partnered with a friend whose name was also Keenan but kept the name when the duo split up. He explained that what made him different from other DJs is that he does not use a laptop to play but can mix his set from a USB.

“I enjoy playing for a big crowd because there are more people who can appreciate what I’m playing for them,” he said. He pointed out that he does not only play hip-hop music, but also tribal house and deep house, among other genres of music. Cannell described himself as a friendly person who enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Cannell recently performed at the Eagle House Fun Day held in Poortview where he performed to a large crowd.

Cannell said that if anyone wishes to contact him he could be contacted on all social media platforms under the name DJ K2K.
