There’s no place like home
MELVILLE– Designer is inspired by South African culture and provide other designers with a platform.
Discovering your inspiration when it comes to fashion can come from different places.
This was the case for fashion designer Cobi Meyer-Domingos who discovered her inspiration when she moved back to South Africa from London five years ago.
Meyer said that when she came back into the country, she was fascinated by how popular African print was and the many different ways it can be used. She then decided to get into fashion retailing and opened her own store based in Melville’s vibrant 7th Street.
“There’s a number of people who want to sell the clothes they make and I wanted to give a platform to put their brands out there. I also started importing clothing, scarfs, skirts and dresses from India. There’s also handmade bird feeders and swings that are made of tyres. I believe it’s important to take care of the environment, there are many items like tyres that can be turned into something beautiful instead of being dumped,” said Meyer.
The creative added that her friend actually came up with the name of her store, Yada Yada Gifts and Clothing Store. She said that when she struggled to come up with a name, her friend jokingly referred to the store as Yada Yada, which eventually stuck.
Meyer added that items like high-waisted shorts, long flowy dresses, big and bright accessories are in fashion this summer.
“I’ve always liked that Melville is like a little village, I love the community, how it’s a creative space and I feel everyone can feel at home here,” concluded Meyer.
