Rugby kicks off with a new season of play-offs
Register a team for the club’s upcoming 10s Tournament on February 8

Vryheid Rugby Club is in full swing after kicking off with practice on Tuesday last week. The players are preparing for play-offs, where they will once again measure their skills, speed and brute strength against Sentraal and Piet Retief, to name the two most formidable nemeses of Vryheid.
Last year, the Maroon Machine steamrolled over Sentraal after the latter was on a hot streak in defeating Piet Retief in the previous game. The win was attributed to the ‘genius plan’ of head coach Lwazi Mduli, who removed Sentraal’s massive forward pack from the equation by playing it wide. And who can forget the game against Piet Retief when Vryheid narrowly lost 27-32. The Vryheid team had some of the best game-play seen in a long time. Piet Retief started off strong and led at the half-time break, 10-27. In the second half, Vryheid mounted a massive comeback and ran in numerous tries to tie up the game with two minutes left. Unfortunately, Vryheid was caught off guard by the Piet Retief fly-half, who snuck in a try at the death of the game.
All old and new players are invited to join practice every Tuesday and Thursday at 18:00 at the Cecil Emmett sports ground. If you want to know what it’s like to compete with or against the Maroon Machine, register a team for the club’s upcoming 10s Tournament on February 8.
