Hundreds of residents have been handed over for the alleged non-payment of water bills.
The amounts vary from R3000 to over R70 000.
Umzinyathi District sent the bills to a debt collecting company who in turn have sent letters of demand to residents.
Strangely, all the hand over letters are dated in June 2013 although the letters have only just been received.
Many of the residents live in Forrestdale and contacted Umzinyathi Councillor, Dr Sandy Bedassi, to register their complaint and to say that had never received a water account and have no idea as to how they will manage to pay the exorbitant amount.
“I have taken several letters of demand to the billing office at the Umzinyathi offices. I have asked them to investigate and let the residents know what is happening. Clearly, people cannot be expected to pay off R70 000 worth of water consumed,” Dr Bedassi told the Courier.
Dr Bedassi advised that those who have received hand over letters to immediately contact the billing department at the Umzinyathi building.
