Could a scam that was uncovered in Durban in 2013 be infiltrating the Estcourt community?
One Estcourt family seems to think so and is asking other residents to be vigilant. The family that did not want to be named told the Estcourt News that a call from a person who claimed to be an Eskom employee wanting to discuss solar energy and its benefits raised the alarm.
The person arranged to come and see the family at home but did not turn up.
A family member said this heightened suspicions and she searched the internet until she found a article that featured in The Witness on August 14, 2013 where testimonies from residents in Waterfall and cases reported in Durban North, Kloof and Hillcrest confirmed the suspicions.
The article details incidents where elderly residents are called by an ‘Eskom’ employee, an appointment set up, sometimes the agent does not show up but when he or she does, they look around the interior and exterior of your home and allegedly attempt to coax you into revealing the last four digits on your credit card. “We would like to warn other residents and ask them to be careful about who they let into their premises.
Another resident also received a call like us and the appointment was set up, it didn’t take place yet,” said the Estcourt resident.
The family has also approached the municipality’s electrical department who confirmed that they were unaware of any survey or visits that Eskom had undertaken.
