Hit and killed by truck

An elderly woman was killed this morning when a truck failed to stop at the HNZ Transport premises in Lyell Street.

The woman was a casual worker and was waiting for work to begin for the day. A truck was going out of the property when the brakes allegedly failed. The truck smashed into the boundary fence and the lady was caught in between the truck and the fence.

EMRS rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save the accident victim. The woman, estimated to be about 58 years old, is believed to have died from internal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating.
