Two die in Van Reenen crash

The Suzuki flipped in the air before landing on its roof

Two men have sadly lost their lives in a fatal accident on the N3 along Van Reenen’s Pass. The accident happened late last night (Friday) when a white Suzuki Alto allegedly rear-ended a truck. Both vehicles were travelling towards Johannesburg at the time.

The Suzuki flipped in the air before landing on its roof. The driver of the truck commented that, “I was just driving along when suddenly there was a bang from behind me. I looked in my rear-view mirror and I saw the car in the air.” Emergency workers from Ladysmith, Van Reenen and Harrismith rushed to the scene, but it was too late for the two young men in the car. Their ages are unconfirmed at this time.

It is believed that the deceased are the driver and front-seat passenger. Another passenger, who is believed to have been sitting in the back of the car, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to hospital to receive further treatment. The driver of the truck sustained slight injuries.

The highway was closed for a short period of time so that the scene could be cleared.

UPDATE:

Van Reenen police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. The deceased have not yet been formally identified.
