Weston ‘go-in’ fishing

Late night and early morning fishing was the programme for a weekend of this type

Weston’s Angling Club embarked on a four-day fishing trip to the lower South Coast.
It was a luxurious outing for them, no camping in tents!
Friends of the school Lisa and Calvin Wright’s beautiful holiday home was on loan to the club.
Late night and early morning fishing was the programme for a weekend of this type.
The first evening saw them pack up at 10.30pm as they were unaware of the structure of the ledges in the dark.
An early start was scheduled the next morning; 4am that is far earlier than rising bell at school.
The eager lads were soon tacked up, and made their way to the “island” through a tricky path.
They immediately got stuck in to some bait fish. Danny Maharaj, the angling master pinned a livie on a non-return slide without a pickup and then caught a baby octopus. No matter what they tried, the fish refused to bite.
A highlight of the morning was sighting a shoal of game fish on a hunt passing.
Unfortunately, the rest of the morning was spent at the house, when the wind picked up, and the barometric pressure dropped.
This inclement weather lasted for the remainder of the day.
On the third day, the keen anglers were up again at four in the morning. The rocks were their destination.
The catch resulted in some blacktail and rockcod. There was a repeat of the previous day’s weather, the wind picked up and ended their fishing for the day.
On the last day of the angling excursion, they moved northwards and persistently tried the conditions.
Not very much luck, with the fishing but a wonderful weekend in beautiful surroundings and great bonding between the fishermen.
They plan to make another trip to the coast in July and hope they will be able to take part in the annual sardine run.
