BHEKUMUZI Graduate Ngema (28), known to some as Major B, was born and raised in Mondlo.
“I was first introduced to the world of music by my late uncle, who used to collect records and had a sound system,” reminisces Bhekumuzi, “I fell in love with Hip Hop in high school and recorded a number of demo tracks.”
Bhekumuzi moved to Johannesburg in 2004 and enrolled at the former Wits Technikon, doing mechanical engineering. But his passion for music grew stronger and he eventually chose to withdraw from his formal studies to pursue his true passion – music.
In 2005, he was introduced to house music and turntables, but only started playing in clubs in 2007 after moving to Pretoria.
“Being friends with influential djs in the industry helped me improve my skills as a dj and gave me a better understanding of the business elements,” says the talented Mr Ngema.
Through the mentorship of Dj Fivastos, Dj Klaas, Dj Malwela and Mr O, Bhekumuzi found himself opening sets for legends like Black Coffee, Vinny Da Vinci and Christos, amongst others.
When speaking of his plans for the future, Bhekumuzi says, “I would like to be involved in community upliftment.”
What better way to reach people than through the universal language of music?
It is with this dream in mind that Mr Ngema proudly speaks of his aptly named production studio, ‘Bhekumuzik Records,’ which offers services such as sound production facilities, audio recording, programming, mastering, sleeve design and printing, event planning and dj or artist management, and is backed by the National Youth Development Agency; DJU Foundation; Ithuba Lentsha Micro Enterprise Programme and the Oskido I Believe Programme.
Bhekumuzi Ngema can be contacted on 083 693 5094 or via email on bhekumuzi@bhekumuzicrecs.co.za.
