Two days before the start of the July school holidays Treverton Prep’s Grade six visited the Siqalo Crèche in Bruntville, Mooi River.
For the class, it was a unique experience. The crèche is situated in the small home of a Bruntville woman. 70 Small children are cared for at the school. Grade six learner Matthew Smith wrote an evocative account of their visit. “It was an amazing experience for us, but also heart breaking. You could say there were many mixed emotions… it was devastating to see that the children had only buckets for toilets and hardly any space to play and enjoy themselves. None the less, they were extremely playful and happy!
“They have amazing spirit and heart. I am very grateful for what I have because those children have hardly anything, but they enjoy every little thing they have.”
The object of the children’s visit was to hand over money they had raised from a book swap they had held earlier in the term.
The crèche is keen to raise sufficient money to buy a photocopier.
During their two-hour visit, the crèche children sang and danced for their visitors and the Prep pupils reciprocated by teaching them games and nursery rhymes.
Luke Doyle expressed the sentiment most of the Grade six class felt:
“I left there feeling very grateful that I go to a wonderful school like Treverton.”
This was echoed by Grace George: “I am so glad I can go to a wonderful school and have a warm classroom filled with warm people.”
At the end of the visit, Michael Morris made an interesting observation: “It was lots of fun even though there was a language barrier, and we had an enjoyable day!
