KWAZULU-NATAL Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Ulundi Tactical Response Team for the recovery of firearms and the arrest of a suspect yesterday in Nongoma.

Members of the response team were doing a routine crime prevention patrol around Nongoma area yesterday, July 16 at about 3:30pm when they received information about illegal firearms in the area. 

They proceeded to Mfemfeni area, Nongoma, where they identified the alleged location of the illegal firearms. 

Three firearms, including an AK47 rifle, a 303 rifle as well as a 9mm pistol were concealed under a bed in the dwelling. A total of 73 live rounds were also recovered from the house.

A 41-year-old man who failed to produce a license to possess these firearms was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the country.

The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on July 17. 

‘The members will continue with their daily operations in the area to get rid of illegal firearms. I encourage community,’ said Ngobeni.
