VRYHEID Round Table had their last collection for their Winter Knights campaign on Thursday evening, July 31.
It was held at Checkers and, once again, the Vryheid community came out in force to support them and their worthy cause.
“Thank you to each and every one of you who opened your hearts and gave to those less fortunate! With the help of Vryheid’s community and being lucky enough to have Rosella and PG Glass as partners we managed to collect in excess of R23,000.00 worth of non-perishable food items, blankets and warm clothes this year!”
Members of Vryheid Round Table have identified families in need in Vryheid and will be donating Winter Knight parcels to them, with the balance of the items collected going to Vryheid Child Welfare for distribution to their network of needy families.
Following the collection, they decided to do something a little different. They got on the back of a bakkie and drove around town looking for homeless people to hand out some food and warm blankets to.
“Seeing the joy which a blanket and some food can bring to someone is really a moving experience and seeing the harsh realities first hand has motivated us to make the 2015 Winter Knights campaign even more successful!”
“One homeless man in particular touched our hearts, he refused to accept anything unless we accepted an old flashlight in return. That flashlight now has a prime spot in our clubhouse to remind us of how lucky we actually are!”
