Sarel Cilliers crowned 2014 soccer champs

On August 11 Sarel Cilliers’s Grade 9s attended a Career Counselling presentation at Dundee High School.
Several medical professionals, including a student doctor, nurse, occupational therapist, radiographer, physiotherapist and audiologist informed the pupils what their professions entail and how to get bursaries and other financial assistance. The student doctor also told them about the programme that is currently running in Cuba whereby disadvantaged learners can benefit. After the break the emergency services informed them of their programmes and college in Pietermaritzburg.
A CHIETA representative informed the pupils about bursaries that are available for engineering studies as well as how to apply.
The Majuba College representative informed the pupils of the difference between Universities of Technology and regular universities. The college has different campuses for different qualifications and even pupils with Grade 9 certificates can apply to study there. She also informed about all the advantages of working hard and obtaining some form of professional education after Grade 12. What was apparent from all the speakers was that Mathematics and Physical Science (or Life Science) is of paramount importance if one would like to study towards a medical or engineering qualification. Pamphlets were handed to all the attendees, as well as pens and rulers.
Choir
An annual highlight of our school choir was the Newcastle Choir Festival hosted by Newcastle High School. On Wednesday, high schools around the area got together to showcase fine talent and perform work in which they have invested many hours of dedication and practice.
A special word of thanks to Mrs Marlie Bruyns for working so hard throughout the year with the choir. 
Soccer
The Sarel Cilliers first soccer team participated in the Utrecht Soccer Tournament on Saturday, August 16. There were 14 teams that took part from all over Northern KZN. The boys did very well. They had a slow start and drew 0-0 against Vryheid Landbou in the first match. However, they picked up the pace and won the next two pool games 2-0 against Vryheid and 4-0 against Tugela.In the semi-final they won 2-0 against Amajuba. The final matches were between Sarel and the host Utrecht. It was a tough match, with Sarel scoring the winning goal with a minute to go and becoming Northern Natal Soccer Champions for 2014.
The Sarel Lions roar against Dundee
On Friday, August 15 the Sarel Cilliers tennis team played their second match of the season against Dundee High School. Sarel Cilliers snatched an overall 10-8 win against their rivals.
Girls’ singles: Siphesihle Msane 8-4, Franci-Mari Gregory 8-3, Mhleli Mkhonza 8-5, Georgia Viljoen 8-5 and Sonja Ackerman 8-5. 
Doubles wins: Siphesihle Msane and Mhleli Mkhona 8-6, Franci-Mari Gregory and Christina Meli 8-5.
Boys’ singles wins: Francois Maree 8-4 and Simphiwe Ndlela 8-2. They also managed to gain one doubles win: Francois Maree and Morgan Gregory 8-6. Other close matches included: Soilidus Nxumalo 5-8, Sithelo Mthembu 6-8 and Slindokuhle Ngcobo 7-8.
