Chess Championship held at Andante
Primary and intermediate phase children (Grade 3 to 7) from Monument and Egerton Primary School, Hamilton Preparatory School and Andante Independent School took part in the challenge.
Andante Independent School held its annual Inter-School Chess Championships on Saturday.
Primary and intermediate phase children (Grade 3 to 7) from Monument and Egerton Primary School, Hamilton Preparatory School and Andante Independent School took part in the challenge. This was the second competition of its kind, with the first taking place last year.
Andante principal Lorraine Schirge said she enjoyed the fact that it was a friendly competition. “It’s not like a sports match where the learners are going for the kill,” she commented.
The competition included three rounds of games, followed by a play-off and ending with the final. The focus was not on the learners’ ages, but rather their abilities and skills.
Monument pupils Elrica Strydom (Grade 6) and Sandile Tshabalala (Grade 7) shared the view that “the competition was awesome and interesting, and it was a good challenge.” Elrica particularly enjoyed the fact that she learnt how other children played the game and is looking forward to next year’s championships.
Ladysmith High School (LHS) pupils assisted by keeping an eye on the proceedings and helping out when needed.
It was a good day of learning, fun and competition. Well done to all those who participated!
