Gymnastics Club in the swing of things
Mrs Jansen van Vuuren took the reigns at the beginning of the year and has upped the club’s membership from 10 gymnasts to 17.
The Newcastle Gymnastics Club recently faced closure after their long time coach sustained a back injury.
Charlene Jansen van Vuuren said the club was nearly forced to close its doors for good.
“The previous coach approached me and offered me the position. I underwent training and wrote the necessary examinations last year. Currently, I am the only qualified gymnastics coach in Newcastle,” said Mrs Jansen van Vuuren.
Mrs Jansen van Vuuren took the reigns at the beginning of the year and has upped the club’s membership from 10 gymnasts to 17. “I am involved at 10 schools with my gymkid programme, so I have experience when it comes to gymnastics,” explained Mrs Jansen van Vuuren.
“Beginners practise on Wednesdays from 3pm to 4pm for girls and 4pm to 5pm for boys. Level gymnasts train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.30pm to 5pm,” said an eager Mrs Jansen van Vuuren.
The club participated in their first competition on July 26 and obtained the following results: Beginners: James Jansen van Vuuren, David Viljoen, Daniel Dannhauser, Jaundrè Middleton, Nicole Brelage, Nicole Struwig and Nadine Brelage were awarded blue badges. Level 1: Retha-Marie Roux and Kayla J.V Rensburg received gold medals. Level 2: Henco Daniels was awarded a silver medal.
