Newcastle’s ace of cakes

Having been nicknamed ‘the cake lady’ after Little Birds Nest found its feet in April, Robyn Emily Lewis is taking baking to a whole new level in Newcastle.

Crafting picture perfect figurines of minions, Tom and Jerry, Hello Kitty and Scooby-Doo to name a few, Mrs Lewis has undeniable talent and passion for the art.

“Technically, I started baking at the beginning of the year. The first cake I baked was for a friend’s little one and from there on I made a cake for my sister-in-law,” explained Mrs Lewis.

She started Little Birds Nest in April, 2014. Although she admits she was unaware of her talent for baking and creating delicious masterpieces, she does however feel her newly discovered skill is a gift from above.

Before finding herself in fondant, Mrs Lewis was an interior decorator, designing layouts for her husband’s business. “I’ve always been artsy, but not when it came to something like baking cakes.”

Commenting on the various bakers in and around Newcastle, Mrs Lewis said, “I think there are a lot of talented women here; baking is a cutthroat business. I don’t see it as a competition, I see it as ‘wow, look at that artist and what she does’. Each of us has our own style and the client is spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the style they prefer.”

Designing her cakes from scratch, Mrs Lewis can whip up creations like no other. “If someone sends me a photo of the exact cake they want, I stick to the design. Although the cakes are beautiful, I like personalising my cakes and adding a bit more detail to them, rather than simply copying a design to a tee.”

Mrs Lewis giggles as she commends Google for inspiring her. Although the internet plays its part, motivation and vision somehow come to her in her sleep. “By the time I wake up, my mind is full of amazing ideas,” said a beaming Mrs Lewis.

Elaborating on her hopes for her business growth within the next two years, Mrs Lewis said, “I don’t want my business to grow substantially; baking a cake is something personal and requires individualisation. I’d like to focus on each and every cake, rather than taking on too many clients at once.”

Mrs Lewis is grateful for the fact that cake makes people happy. “I have fun with it. I experiment with something new almost every day.”

Having numerous sleepless nights over her crafty creations hasn’t hampered Mrs Lewis from producing cakes of unsurpassed beauty. It is evident she will grow from strength to strength, leaving her handprint on the cake-loving community of Newcastle.
