Jaco Fourie, a Grade 12 pupil at Pioneer High School, who is currently writing his trial examinations, achieved outstanding results with his lambs at the recent Livestock and Carcass Auctions in Vryheid.
In January, Jaco purchased ten pregnant ewes from Lourens Greyling. During April the ewes had 13 lambs, which Jaco raised and entered into the show, under the advice of his uncle, Henry Van Pletzen of Voermol. Nine of the lambs are hamels, meaning male sheep or lambs which have been castrated. Jaco entered two groups of four lambs each into the livestock show, achieving a good result of third place, with both groups weighing in at between 41kg and 49kg per lamb.
He also entered both groups for the carcass competition, where one of his lambs took the title of Champion Slaughter Lamb and one of his groups were named reserve champion group. Jaco would like to thank everyone who helped and encouraged him in his endeavour.
