THE past week saw Kilian Academy host the first Spring School for children in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

While children took a break from school, Kilian Academy offered parents some respite, presenting children with the opportunity to train BJJ for two hours each day from Monday to Friday.

BJJ training was offered by Kilian Academy Manager, Chris Venter, who is himself a student in the art of BJJ and instructor of the children’s classes at Kilian Academy.

“The attending children showed dedication and maturity beyond their age. The level of skill demonstrated in such a short time is honestly astounding.”

Most children attending the Spring School are already enrolled as students at Kilian Academy and found the additional training time a boost to their ability.

“The Spring School allowed the students to train for two hours, from Monday until Friday. The total immersion allowed the children’s bodies and minds to be stretched to the limit. New students were given the opportunity to experience the fastest growing martial art in the world and be exposed to Kilian Academy and its training staff.”

Venter added that the September holiday, being a short school holiday, is ideal for children to attend a week long training. Training limits their exposure to the ever growing trend of electronic media and allows them to engage with other children with similar interests.

Apart from the obvious physical advantages BJJ offers, it also stimulates confidence and self control. BJJ training assists potential bullies to channel their energy in a more positive manner and those who are being bullied, to defend themselves.

Kilian Academy’s Spring School will be hosted annually and future planning includes the addition of an exclusive teenager class.
