Vryheid Cricket Club – A memorable weekend and a full round of fixtures

A FULL round of fixtures was played last weekend.

On Saturday, Mr X did battle with Wicket Wasps in a Kingsmead Mynahs Cup clash. Mr X batted first and were doing fine at 110 for 4 after 15 overs, but Norman Philips, with ball in hand, had other ideas. In the 10 balls that he bowled, he took 5 wickets, which included a phenomenal 4 wickets in 4 balls!

Mr X crashed to 121 all out, despite Tiaan Kruger (59) and Devan Aspden (33 not out) scoring runs. Also contributing with the ball was Kobie Marè (4-2-18-2). Wicket Wasps, with 30 overs to make the target, batted cautiously and reached the score in the 18th over for the loss of 4 wickets.

Andrew Brooks, with a fine 67 not out, and Nicholas Booysen, with 13, were top scorers. Miguel Machado (6-2-24-3) and Gavin Bosman (4-0-30-1) were the only wicket takers for Mr X. Wicket Wasps won by 6 wickets.

Two Kennedy cup matches were played on Sunday. The Gladiators traveled to eDumbe. Dumbe batted first and were all dismissed in the 24th over for 133 runs. Top run scorers were Anton Beneke (54) and Keegan Meier (25). The best bowling figures for the Gladiators came from Marnu Janse van Rensburg (4-0-22-3) and Mohammed Ashgar (3-0-19-2).

With a few hiccups along the way, the Gladiators managed to reach the target in the 22nd over for the loss of 7 wickets, with the top run contributors being Juan Swanepoel (33 not out) and Adrian Kruger (31).

Top bowlers for Dumbe were MJ Pollard (4-0-25-2) and Charl Beneke (4-0-30-2). The Gladiators won by 3 wickets. Meanwhile, at Cecil Emmett, The Scorpions were playing Mr X in very chilly and overcast conditions. The Scorpions batted first and scored 174 all out in the 37th over, thanks to a good 66 from Freedom Buthelezi and 31 from Thando Magubani. Devan Aspden (7-1-24-3) and Hein Steenkamp (8-1-29-2) were among the wicket takers for Mr X.

In difficult conditions, Mr X were unable to score the required runs and were all out for 136 runs. A hard worked 43 from Duvan Grobbelaar and 20 from Miguel Machado was not enough to help Mr X to win the game. Good bowling from Thulani Zondo (6-3-18-5) and Roger Ntshangase (8-0-46-3) secured a 38 run victory for the Scorpions.
