VRYHEID Cricket Club dedicated last weekend to pay tribute to Australian cricketer Phillip Joel Hughes.
Phil Hughes passed away three days before his 26th birthday, which he would have celebrated last Sunday. The world was shocked to hear of his passing after he was struck with a ball on the neck while batting in an Australian domestic league game. To our cricketing brother, Phil, may you be 63 not out forever!
The results from last weekend are as follows: On Saturday, two Kingsmead Mynahs league games were played. At Cecil Emmett, the Scorpions played against Mr X. Scorpions batted first and scored 171/4 in their allotted 30 overs with Thabo Masondo (40) and N Zwane (38 not out) top scoring. Best bowling figures for Mr X came from Kyle Taylor (3-0-11-2) and Devan Aspden (4-0-23-1). Mr X managed to reach the target in the 26th over for the loss of 8 wickets. The highest run scorers were Miguel Machado (43) and Jaco Grobbelaar (39) with Thabo Zondo (6-2-20-3) and N Zwane (1-0-1-2) having the best bowling figures for the Scorpions. Mr X won by 2 wickets.
In the other match, Dumbe hosted the Gladiators. Dumbe batted first and scored an impressive 262/9 in their 30 overs thanks to R van Zuydam and Charle Beneke scoring 66 and 56 respectively. Wessel Vorster (5-0-47-4) and Joshua van Niekerk (5-1-29-2) returned with best bowling figures for the Gladiators. In the innings of the Gladiators, they were bundled out for just 42 in the 11th over thanks to fine bowling from S Nel (2-2-0-5) and Brendon Brockmann (3-0-9-3). Dean Aitken was the only Gladiator batsman to get into double figures, scoring 20. Dumbe won by 220 runs.
In a Kennedy Cup match played at Cecil Emmett park on Sunday, Mr X played Wicket Wasps. Mr X batted first and amassed 363/2 in 40 overs with Miguel Machado hitting an unbelievable 206 not out. Mathew Stride also scored a century, making 109. Rudolf Scholts (8-0-54-1) and Andrew Brooks (8-0-76-1) were the only wicket takers for Wicket Wasps. Unfortunately, rain intervened on what could have been an interesting run chase and, at the end of 12 overs, Wicket Wasps were 93/2 with Ashley van den Heever (22) and Andrew Brooks (20) still at the crease. The only wicket taker was Jaco (4-0-23-2). The game ended in a draw.
