THE last games for the Christmas and new year break were played last weekend.
Two very well spirited games were played at Cecil Emmett. On Saturday, the Scorpions faced the Gladiators in a close match. Gladiators batted first in this Kingsmead Mynahs Cup match and scored 126/8 in the allotted 30 overs. Top scorers for the Gladiators were Mohammed Ashgar (38) and Wikus Janse van Rensburg (36). Impressive bowling from young Connor High who bagged a five wicket haul, including a hat trick, ended with figures of 4-0-16-5. Freedom Buthelezi also chipped in with two wickets for 21 runs in his six overs. In a tight run chase, Scorpions managed to pass the score with only one wicket to spare in the 24th over. Top batsmen for the Scorpions were Freedom Buthelezi (37) and Roger Ntshangase (33). Best bowling figures for the Gladiators came from Barend Janse van Rensburg (4-0-14-2) and Dean Aitken (3-0-13-1). The Scorpions won by one wicket.
On Sunday, the Wicket Wasps played Gladiators in a 40 over Kennedy Cup match. Wicket Wasps won the toss and elected to field on a sweltering summer day. The Gladiators were eventually all out for 179 in the 35th over with Wikus Janse van Vuuren (43) and Afzal (38) top scoring. Ruan Senekal (8-0-45-3) and Tiaan Naude’ (8-2-29-2) were the pick of the bowlers for the Wicket Wasps. The Gladiators were unable the defend the target and Wicket Wasps were able to secure victory in the 31st over for the loss of six wickets, thanks to good knocks from Tiaan Naudè (58) and Freedom Buthelezi (41 not out). Wikus Janse van Rensburg (8-0-58-3) and Mohammed Ashgar (8-0-33-2) were the top wicket takers for the Gladiators. Wicket Wasps won by four wickets.
