For the past few weeks locals have been complaining about the terrible smell in the town’s water supply.
It is suspected that the stench, which has been described by some as a “raw swampy smell”, may be the cause of an algae of some sort in one of the dams that supply Vryheid’s water as there has been very little rain this Summer.
At this stage, this has not yet been confirmed.
The Vryheid Herald contacted the municipality but to no avail as their phone lines are still down.
It is said that there is at present a huge problem with their phone lines. Lightning knocked the system to pieces and the insurance needs to assess it before it can be replaced.
Residents will be updated as the story unfolds.
