Former National Police Commisioner Jackie Selebi has died in hospital in Pretoria this morning at the age of 64.

Eyewitness News reported that Selebi’s friend, Schabir Shaik said he heard the news this morning.

“I believe he’s been in an induced coma for some time now for about two-and-a-half weeks. He finally passed on between late last night and early this morning I believe,” he was quoted as saying.

“He was a good man,” Shaik said.

“I have good memories when I worked with him at Shell House in the early 90s. I recall him to be a good comrade,” he concluded.

Selebi was jailed after he was convicted of corruption in 2010 and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for taking bribes from then convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti.

He began his jail sentence, but was kept at Pretoria Central prison’s medical wing as he suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure.

After serving 7 months of his 15 year sentence in prison, Selebi was granted medical parole.

Selebi finally succumbed to the illnesses he had been suffering from and passed away at a hospital in Pretoria.
