Update: Jackie Selebi’s death

The Police Ministry has asked the people of South Africa to remember Selebi for “serving” them

News reports are that former National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi died in hospital this morning in Pretoria (Friday) at the age of 64.

Former president Thabo Mbeki appointed Selebi as National Commissioner in 2000.

In 2010, he was found guilty of fraud, corruption and racketeering for his involvement in taking bribes from businessman Glenn Agliotti. At the time, Agliotti was a suspect in the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble.

The Police Ministry has asked the people of South Africa to remember Selebi for “serving” them, and to be “grateful”.

He was released on medical parole due to kidney failure in 2012 and was receiving dialysis for the condition.

Selebi also suffered from diabetes.
