GALLERY: Vryheid Cricket Club – Wicket Wasps take victory in ideal weather
THE 2015 leg of the season started off last weekend with wonderful, sunny and hot conditions.

On Saturday, Wicket Wasps matched up against the Scorpions in a Kingsmead Mynah’s Cup game played at Cecil Emmett Park. Batting first, Wicket Wasps scored a handsome 272/6 in their 30 overs, thanks to great batting from Andrew Brooks (108) and Shane Pennington (61). Wicket takers for the Scorpions were Freedom Buthelezi (6-0-37-2) and Joshua Stride (6-1-42-2). Unfortunately the Scorpions crashed to 112 all out in the 22nd over, despite Freedom Buthelezi (45) and T Magubane (25) scoring runs. Contributing with the ball for Wicket Wasps were Norman Phillips (3-1-8-2) and Michael Beghin (3-0-13-2). Wicket Wasps won by 160 runs.
Also on Saturday, the Gladiators traveled to eDumbe to play a Kingsmead Mynah’s Cup game. Dumbe batted first and scored a decent 243/4 in the allotted 30 overs. Carlo Hambrock (88) and K Meier (59) top scored for Dumbe. Best bowlers for the Gladiators were A Hussan (6-0-25-1) and Wikus Janse van Rensburg (4-0-39-1).
In chasing the target, the Gladiators were bowled out for 190 runs in the 26th over. Top scoring with the bat were A Hussan (37) and M Ashgar (25), while Zane Holliday (4-0-37-4) and Leon Solms (5-0-14-3) were chief destroyers with the ball for Dumbe. Dumbe won by 53 runs.
Two Kennedy cup matches were played on Sunday. Mr X traveled to eDumbe, where they batted first and were all dismissed for 183 runs. Top run scorers were Miguel Machado (37) and Devin Aspden (33 not out). The best bowling figures for Dumbe came from Juan Freyer (8-0-45-4) and Leon Solms (5-0-21-2). Dumbe managed to reach the target losing four wickets, with the top run contributors being Anton Beneke (54 not out) and Leon Solms (35). Top bowlers for Mr X were Mathew Stride (6-0-32-1) and Johan Pollard (3-0-17-1). Dumbe won by six wickets.
Meanwhile, at Cecil Emmett, The Gladiators played the Wicket Wasps. The Gladiators batted first and scored 126 all out in the 23rd over. Top scoring for the Gladiators were M Ahmed (40) and Adnan (24). Tiaan Naude’ (5-0-12-2) and Kobie Marè (3-0-14-2) were the leading wicket takers for Wicket Wasps. Wicket Wasps reached the target score in the 18th over for the loss of six wickets. Kobie Marè (30) and 22 not out from Norman Phillips was enough to help win the game. Good bowling from Waseem Khan (4-1-11-2) and Adnan (4-0-39-2) was not enough to secure victory for the Gladiators, who lost the game by four wickets.
